Ooo, That Smarts! – EMF Radiation Risk Awareness Grows – Update 6-22-11

Wireless Meter Fight Links to More Insight About RF Issues
The attempt to mass deploy wireless, so-called ‘smart,’ or AMI (automated metering infrastructure) gas, water and electric meters without adequate research and testing may turn out to be one of the dumbest – and most costly – policy and management decisions ever made.

Right up there with with the deployment of nuclear weapons and nuclear power technologies, agricultural chemicals and genetically modified foods and fossil fuels.

Both above mentioned forms of biologically unfriendly radiation pollution (nuclear – ionizing, and EMF/RF – non-ionizing, have already contaminated the planetary environment billions of times beyond the biologically friendly levels in which our cells and DNA evolved. Which is why we cover both issues in this blog.

Not to mention that the synergistic effects of these forms of man-made radiation – in combination with chemical pollution – on the DNA and heavy metals within our bodies and on other biological systems is not known.

Informed public resistance to the wireless meters and Fukushima-awakened anti-nuclear sentiment is leading to heightened public awareness and alarm about other related electromagnetic radiation impacts from cell phones, wireless antennas and dirty electricity to directed energy weaponry and weather modification warfare.

Its not a pretty picture. and people in related issue campaigns are beginning to get it – to the consternation of the telecom-IT-nuclear-military-industrial-PR complex.

Once people concerned about the health effects, public safety, personal privacy and security risks of cell phones unite with those working on antenna proliferation, weather modification and wireless meter deployment, as well as with other radiation and chemical pollution issue, a formidable political and economic constituency will have formed.

As the posts in this update addition suggest, that confluence of movements is beginning to happen.

IARC: Cell Phone Radiation Is a Possible Human Carcinogen MicroWaveNews.com
It’s not easy to reach unanimous agreement on anything to do with cell phone radiation. And when it comes to cell phones and cancer, forget about it. But the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) nearly pulled it off. On Tuesday, May 31, more than two dozen scientists and doctors from 14 countries —a group IARC Director Christopher Wild called “the world’s leading experts”— issued a joint statement that cell phone and other types of radiofrequency (RF) and microwave radiation might cause cancer.

Mobile phones and head tumours. The discrepancies in cause-effect relationships in the epidemiological studies – how do they arise?

Environmental Health 2011, 10:59 doi:10.1186/1476-069X-10-59
Published: 17 June 2011
Abstract (provisional)
Background
Whether or not there is a relationship between use of mobile phones (analogue and digital cellulars, and cordless) and head tumour risk (brain tumours, acoustic neuromas, and salivary gland tumours) is still a matter of debate; progress requires a critical analysis of the methodological elements necessary for an impartial evaluation of contradictory studies.
Methods
A close examination of the protocols and results from all case-control and cohort studies, pooled- and meta-analyses on head tumour risk for mobile phone users was carried out, and for each study the elements necessary for evaluating its reliability were identified. In addition, new meta-analyses of the literature data were undertaken. These were limited to subjects with mobile phone latency time compatible with the progression of the examined tumours, and with analysis of the laterality of head tumour localisation corresponding to the habitual laterality of mobile phone use.
Results
Blind protocols, free from errors, bias, and financial conditioning factors, give positive results that reveal a cause-effect relationship between long-term mobile phone use or latency and statistically significant increase of ipsilateral head tumour risk, with biological plausibility. Non-blind protocols, which instead are affected by errors, bias, and financial conditioning factors, give negative results with systematic underestimate of such risk. However, also in these studies a statistically significant increase in risk of ipsilateral head tumours is quite common after more than 10 years of mobile phone use or latency. The meta-analyses , our included, examining only data on ipsilateral tumours in subjects using mobile phones since or for at least 10 years, show large and statistically significant increases in risk of ipsilateral brain gliomas and acoustic neuromas.
Conclusion
our analysis of the literature studies and of the results from meta-analyses of the significant data alone shows an almost doubling of the risk of head tumours induced by long-term mobile phone use or latency.

Is Apple Launching a Pre-emptive Strike Against Free Speech?
So you think you control your smartphone? Think again.
Late last week reports uncovered a plan by Apple, manufacturer of the iPhone, to patent technology that can detect when people are using their phone cameras and shut them down.
Apple says this technology was intended to stop people from recording video at live concerts, which should worry the creative commons crowd. But a remote “kill switch” has far more sinister applications in the hands of repressive governments. And it further raises concerns about the power new media companies hold over our right to connect and communicate.

Imagine if Apple’s device had been available to the Mubarak regime earlier this year, and Egyptian security forces had deployed it around Tahrir Square to disable cameras just before they sent in their thugs to disperse the crowd.

Would the global outcry that helped drive Mubarak from office have occurred if a blackout of protest videos had prevented us from viewing the crackdown?

SF Woman Arrested for Sitting on Smart Meter Truck
An activist protesting against the installation of ‘smart’ meters was arrested today for civil disobedience. Amy O’Hair was arrested at Monterey and Edna in the Sunnyside neighborhood of San Francisco at 9.30 on Saturday 18 June 2011.
She sat on the hood of a smart meter installation truck to prevent installation of smart meters and refused to move. The police were called and arrested her. It was early in the morning, and few people were around, but a bystander waiting at a bus stop gave support. Amy was taken to 425 Seventh Street (Bryant Police station) to be cited.

Your gas meter: The new frontline in cyberwar
By the end of 2020, the government wants every home in the UK to be fitted with a smart meter. The device, as part of a networked system of localised power distribution, allows consumers to control their consumption and — more contentiously — also lets utilities companies monitor real-time usage. The

The £8 billion scheme is being sold as a way for the average household to cut its energy bills by an estimated £28 per year.

But could such a banal technology in fact be fraught with danger? In July 2009 — five months before the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) announced the initiative — security firm IOActive demonstrated a worm that could rapidly spread through a smart-grid network, disabling meters as it went. The experiment proved what many cybersecurity experts already knew: hackers distributing the right malware could shut down the network. Britain would go dark.

“Before, to destroy a meter, you had to take a sledgehammer to it,” explains John Bumgarner, research director for security technology at think tank the US Cyber Consequences Unit. “That worm could destroy 300,000 [smart meters] in one go. The smart grid is going to be a major target for hackers.”

,,,In March 2007 an industrial generator at the US Department of Energy’s National Laboratory in Idaho began to malfunction. First, it shuddered violently; then steam appeared, before vapour billowed from the valves. Within seconds, the machine was hidden by smoke. From outside, the building appeared to be on fire.

This event appeared to be nothing more than a mechanical failure. In fact it was a deliberate attack by the US Department of Homeland Security and its National Cyber Security Division on one of its own facilities, the first demonstration of Project Aurora, a government programme aimed at establishing the potential of cyberattacks to undermine critical infrastructure such as nuclear plants, chemical-treatment centres and water-filtration plants.

The experiment took place in a controlled environment, using a generator unconnected to any national power grid. But it showed that real-world infrastructure can be remotely disabled or even destroyed with only malicious code.

After Fukushima, What? – EON Nuke Digest 6-21-11

Is the ‘Nuclear Renaissance’ DOA?
Too soon to tell. But, as today’s stories show, there are signs that – despite subsidies, liability caps, loan guarantees, friends in high places and deep pockets for PR – the nuclear industry is at least on the ropes.

The first “independent” review of the safety failures during Japan’s nuclear disaster reveals some chillingly obvious “lessons” to be learned
…I used quote marks on the word “independent” because the report comes from the International Atomic Energy Association (pdf) (IAEA) which, while independent of Japan, is far from independent from the nuclear industry it was founded to promote. But this conflict of interest only makes the findings of the IEAE’s experts more startling….
So let’s take a look at some of the 15 conclusions and 16 lessons (I’ve edited a bit for brevity)….Read more

Midwest Floods: Both Nebraska Nuke Stations Threatened
By Rady Ananda

June 20 UPDATE: On June 17, the NRC published another Event Report by Fort Calhoun. A hole in the floor (caused by what?) has led to flooding, threatening the pumps. “Flooding through this penetration could have impacted the ability of the station’s Raw Water pumps to perform their design accident mitigation functions.”

About 5 million* acres in the US corn belt have flooded, which will spike the cost of gas and food over the next several months. Worse, several nuclear power plants sit in the flooded plains. Both nuclear plants in Nebraska are partly submerged and the FAA has issued a no-fly order over both of them.

On June 7, the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant filed an Alert with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission after a fire broke out in the switchgear room. During the event, “spent fuel pool cooling was lost” when two fuel pumps failed for about 90 minutes.

NPPD: Nuke Plant Could Be Shut Down “In Three Seconds”, Critics Still Worry

Despite ongoing and growing flood worries don’t tell the folks who run a Nebraska nuclear power plant, which is designed similar to the wrecked reactor in Japan, that the facility 70 miles from Lincoln and Omaha is an accident waiting to happen.

Rising water, falling journalism
By Dawn Stover | Bulletin of Atomic Scientists

… Failure of the fourth estate. Newspapers and websites all over the country have reported on the flooding and fire at Fort Calhoun, but most articles simply paraphrase and regurgitate information from the NRC and OPPD press releases, which aggregators and bloggers then, in turn, simply cut and paste. Even the Omaha World-Herald didn’t send local reporters to cover the story; instead, the newspaper published an article on the recent fire written by Associated Press reporters — based in Atlanta and Washington.

Scrambling for reactor manual, borrowing equipment: Report shows Japan nuke plant unprepared
AP/Wash Post
TOKYO — A new report says Japan’s tsunami-ravaged nuclear plant was so unprepared for the disaster that workers had to bring protective gear and an emergency manual from distant buildings and borrow equipment from a contractor.

The report, released Saturday by plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co., is based on interviews of workers and plant data. It portrays chaos amid the desperate and ultimately unsuccessful battle to protect the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant from meltdown, and shows that workers struggled with unfamiliar equipment and fear of radiation exposure.

Report: Tritium Leaks Found at 3/4 of US Nuclear Sites
by Jeff Donn
BRACEVILLE, Ill. – Radioactive tritium has leaked from three-quarters of U.S. commercial nuclear power sites, often into groundwater from corroded, buried piping, an Associated Press investigation shows.

Burying Our Heads in Radioactive Sand
Leslie Savan
Japan is the most nuke-fearing country in the world—Hiroshima and Nagasaki saw to that, and Godzilla is one way they’ve taught their children to never forget. The Japanese take such care in making their skyscrapers, bridges and tunnels earthquake-proof that most of us assumed they’d go even further to protect their nuclear reactors… until those cores started melting down like knots on a fuse after Friday’s tsunami.

So if nuclear meltdowns, partial or full, could happen there, they could happen anywhere, and all those pictures of cars and buildings bobbing in ink-black water like disaster-movie props carry a very immediate sense of warning. They’re a reminder of just how fragile the whole world is—and how brittle are the mental containment systems we use to assure ourselves that whatever we’re doing in the name of our way of life is safe, sane and right.

…Has any of this dampened the right’s enthusiasm for American exceptionalism, for “creating our own reality” as the biggest empire on the block? Not really. Some truths turned out to be inoperative—like, for example, that housing prices would always go up, or that we’d face a “mushroom cloud” if we didn’t send an army against Saddam. That a radioactive cloud is more likely to drift our way on prevailing air currents from nuclear reactors that we designed ourselves (GE designed six and built three of Fukushima’s disintegrating reactors) is so mind-boggling that it’s best dismissed as part of the left’s “agenda.” Which is what Glenn Beck did Monday, insisting that (perfectly rational) talk about Japan’s nuclear disaster is being fomented by none other than George Soros and the Tides Foundation.

Cold Comfort at Senate Nuclear Safety Hearing
George Zornick
…Commissioners also had no answers about how to fix backup power systems that continue to cool nuclear material in the event of a major power outage. The batteries at Fukushima ran for only eight hours—not nearly long enough. In the United States, the standard length is only four hours. “This is something we have to look into and take action on,” said commissioner George Apostolakis. “I’m not sure what that action would be.”

Amidst these less-than-inspiring answers, the NRC commissioners tried to downplay the possibility of similar events happening here anyhow. “The likelihood of something like this happening in the United States is very, very small,” said Jaczko. Senator Barbara Boxer, who chairs the committee, asked commissioner William Magwood to list four or five areas of concern following Fukushima, and he couldn’t provide any. He responded instead that “you can’t predict events that will happen in the future. You have to be able to recover from whatever happens.”

Nuclear Crisis in Japan – NIRS – Nuclear Information and Resource Service
UPDATE, Friday, June 17, 2011. There have been increasing reports of radioactive “hotspots” being found around Japan, especially in the area outside but near the evacuation zone of course, but also quite far away. For example, the Wall Street Journal reported today on a hotspot found in Chiba Prefecture 120 miles from Fukushima Daiichi and not too far from Tokyo. There have been reports of elevated readings in Tokyo itself, and across northern Japan.

… Some have suggested that in light of the new developments we should abandon nuclear power. I have a different proposal, perhaps more in keeping with the peculiar nature of the peril. Let us pause and study the matter. For how long? Plutonium, a component of nuclear waste, has a half-life of 24,000 years, meaning that half of it is transformed into other elements through radioactive decay. This suggests a time-scale. We will not be precipitous if we study the matter for only half of that half-life, 12,000 years. In the interval, we can make a search for safe new energy sources, among other useful endeavors. Then perhaps we’ll be wise enough to make good use of the split atom.

The Nuclear Endgame Begins in Germany

Germany may well be regarded as the nation where the endgame of nuclear power began. The conservative and pro-business German government proposed a law to switch off all nuclear power plants by the end of 2022. Polls indicate that 85 percent of Germans want nuclear power to be phased out within a decade. A clear technical and economic vision of a clean energy future, and a renewed determination for rational energy policies, fuel this demand.

The Big Fukushima Lie Flies High

The global nuclear industry and its allies in government are making a desperate effort to cover up the consequences of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. “The big lie flies high,” comments Kevin Kamps of the organization Beyond Nuclear.

Not only is this nuclear establishment seeking to make it look like the Fukushima catastrophe has not happened going so far as to claim that there will be “no health effects” as a result of it but it is moving forward on a “nuclear renaissance,” its scheme to build more nuclear plants.

Indeed, next week in Washington, a two-day “Special Summit on New Nuclear Energy” will be held involving major manufacturers of nuclear power plants including General Electric, the manufacturer of the Fukushima plantsand U.S. government officials….

Are We on the Brink of Burying Nuke Power Forever?
by Harvey Wasserman
This may be the moment history has turned definitively against atomic energy.

To be sure: we are still required to fight hard to bury reactor loan guarantees in the United States. There are parallel struggles in China, Indian, England, France and South Korea.

The great fear is that until every single reactor on this planet is shut, none of us is really safe from another radioactive horror show.

Thus the moment is clearly marked at Fukushima by three reactors and a radioactive fuel pool still untamed after three months, with the horrific potential to do far more apocalyptic damage than we’ve seen even to date.

New NASA Research Points To Possible HAARP Connection In Japan Earthquake, Tsunami
Recent data released by Dimitar Ouzounov and colleagues from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland highlights some strange atmospheric anomalies over Japan just days before the massive earthquake and tsunami struck on March 11.

Seemingly inexplicable and rapid heating of the ionosphere directly above the epicenter reached a maximum only three days prior to the quake, according to satellite observations, suggesting that directed energy emitted from transmitters used in the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) may have been responsible for inducing the quake.

Paradigm Shift Happens – EON E-Smog Digest 6-13-11

Bursting the Bubble of Denial
As Thomas Kuhn showed in his landmark book THE STRUCTURE OF SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTIONS, established perceptions of ‘scientific truth’ are very resistant to change. Careers, professional identities, institutional power relationships, industries and fortunes are built on the reigning perceptions of ‘reality,’ so it isn’t just ‘hard evidence’ and rational, objective debate that dictates the glacial pace of paradigm shift. Powerful vested interests – personal, academic, corporate and economic – do too.

But shift does happen and we can see it now in slow motion before our very eyes as wireless radiation health effects become undeniable. Scroll down for leads and links.

International Experts’ Perspective on the Health Effects of Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) and Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR)

June 11, 2011. Below are some of the key resolutions/appeals released by expert scientific groups around the world since 1998, regarding the biological and health effects of both low frequency electromagnetic fields (EMF) associated with electricity and radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic radiation (EMR) generated by wireless devices.

Anyone who reads these cannot be left with the illusion (or delusion) that this form of energy is without adverse biological and health consequences at levels well below existing guidelines. Children are particularly vulnerable. It is irresponsible of governments to maintain the status quo in light of thousands of studies that have been published and statements by these experts.

IARC: Cell Phone Radiation Is a Possible Human Carcinogen
Small Group Will File Minority Opinion

Just about every news outlet in the world reported this week that an expert panel at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) announced that long-term use of a cell phone might lead to two different types of tumors, glioma, a type of brain cancer, and acoustic neuroma, a tumor of the auditory nerve.

Now Microwave News brings you the inside story of what happened at the meeting, much of which has yet to be told.

The decision to designate cell phone radiation a “possible human carcinogen” was close to unanimous–there were only two holdouts. One was from the the U.S. National Cancer Institute.

Antitrust Review of the AT&T/T-Mobile Transaction

Abstract:
In this Essay, we review AT&T Inc.’s proposed $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile USA, Inc., under federal merger law, under the U.S. Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission’s 2010 Horizontal Merger Guidelines, and with a focus on possible remedies. We find, under a rule of law approach, that the proposed acquisition is presumptively anticompetitive, and the merging parties in their public disclosures have failed to overcome this presumption. Next we find that under the Merger Guidelines, there is reason to believe that the transaction may result in higher prices to consumers under several different plausible theories. Finally, we turn to the question of possible remedies. We conclude that there is a high likelihood that divestitures will not solve the competitive problems, and make the case for enjoining the acquisition.

‘Smart meters’ are the future

Re “Outcry over ‘smart meters,’ ” May 29
A smarter grid is crucial to achieving the clean energy revolution we need. Choices that slow that revolution will keep us dependent on fossil fuels, known contributors to various illnesses….[ the usual drivel. ]

The UNLABELED SMARTAPPLIANCE ZONE.
That means your home becomes wireless land rather you want it or not and without warning. If you happen to have a bioelectric implant for health purposes, which are dangerously sensitive to RF (per National Institute of Health,) you could be buying a trip to the hospital or the morgue with your next appliance purchase.

If you are an electro hypersensitive person, you may have purchased a greater electrical annoyance that could drive you out of your home sooner.

This is an unlabeled trespass and the companies need to know that you are against it. It seems like any corporation can create anything, add it to an important product you need and not tell you. That’s a classic example of the toxic Trojan horse. Buyer Beware!

MISREPRESENTATIONS OF WIRELESS SMART METERS
When people send these depressing articles, please also include the quality comments along with the article. This article has one comment at this time and I am copying it for you.

The utility information generated by Wireless smart meters is NOT real-time and it is NOT formatted for customer use so it does NOT assist customers to use less energy or lower their utility bills. The information only assists the Utility Company to bill customers and shut off customer power remotely.

In the U.S. & UK and other countries where Wireless smart meters are being installed, energy use is NOT decreasing, customer UTILITY BILLS ARE INCREASING, there are additional PROBLEMS & COSTS incurred from increased SECURITY & HACKING PROBLEMS and the Wireless meters are creating ELECTRICAL INTERFERENCE PROBLEMS.
Wireless smart meters are NOT mandated by the US Federal Energy Program, as California’s PG$E pretends.

The Utility companies are salivating over eliminating the jobs of the full-time-with-benefit meter reader employees and replacing them with phone operators in India and the Philippines who read scripts to customers over the phone for $4 per day with NO Benefits.

42 Cities & Counties in California have taken positions AGAINST Wireless smart meters and 13 have passed Ordinances prohibiting the Wireless meters.

The monetary transfers from customers to utility companies are huge, the problems are real and severe, but the advertised benefits are NOT occurring.

Dead End for Nuclear Power? – EON Update 6-13-11

Pushback Turns to Backlash
Despite the bad news – and hot particles – continuing to come out of Fukushima, there are some signs that a combination of public opposition, market forces, scientific rationality, and perhaps even plain old common sense are beginning to slow the mad lemming rush toward the nuclear ‘renaissance’ cliff. At least for the moment, licensing delays, building plan cancellations and even nuke plant shutdowns are spreading worldwide. Scroll down for articles and video links on this and other nuclear topics.

Ft. Calhoun nuclear plant flood and fire
As if the flooding isn’t enough, they had an electrical fire, and shut down the spent fuel pond pumps to aid in fighting it. There are many articles posted on this, all the IDENTICAL AP article, and not one mention of flooding:…

Nuke plant lost spent fuel pump in suspected fire
ATLANTA (AP) — A nuclear power plant in Nebraska briefly lost the pump used to cool spent nuclear fuel during a suspected electrical fire.

Utility officials said the fire Tuesday damaged an electrical system used to run a pump at the Fort Calhoun Station that recirculates water in a pool holding hot, radioactive nuclear fuel that has been used.

The pump was out of commission for an hour before the system was restored. Omaha Public Power District spokesman Mike Jones said the company had backup equipment but didn’t need to use it. Jones initially said that plant operators deliberately took the pump offline to respond to the fire.

If a pool pump fails for several days and is not fixed, cooling water could boil away and eventually cause radioactive releases. Read more

Japan Admits 3 Nuclear Meltdowns, More Radiation Leaked into Sea; U.S. Nuclear Waste Poses Deadly Risks

Almost three months after the earthquake and tsunami that triggered a nuclear disaster in Japan, new radiation “hot spots” may require the evacuation of more areas further from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power facility. Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency recently admitted for the first time that full nuclear meltdowns occurred at three of the plant’s reactors, and more than doubled its estimate for the amount of radiation that leaked from the plant in the first week of the disaster in March. “What they failed to mention is that they discharged an equally large amount into the ocean,” says our guest Robert Alvarez, former senior policy adviser to the U.S. Secretary of Energy.

Fukushima in Our Food: Low Levels of Radiation from Japan’s Nuclear Meltdown Detected in Milk, Fruit and Vegetable Samples Tested from California Farms

June 1, 2011 | By Steven Hoffman
The emerging reality of the ongoing nuclear reactor crisis in Fukushima, Japan—now in its third month after a devastating earthquake and tsunami caused nuclear explosions at the plant 150 miles north of Tokyo—is that it is not under control at all. Three of the six reactors are in meltdown. The crippled reactors are acting like a huge dirty bomb, emitting significant quantities of radioactive isotopes that are, in fact, contaminating our air, water, soil and food in a steady stream that may continue for a long time.

And it’s not just affecting Japan, though they’re certainly getting the worst of it. Since the accident on March 12, radioactive fallout from Fukushima has been spreading to the U.S. and across the northern hemisphere. Elevated levels of radiation caused by the meltdowns in Japan have been detected in drinking water across the country, in rainwater, in soil, and in food grown on U.S. farms.

The mainstream media is not really reporting on this….Read more.

NUCLEAR CRISIS: HOW IT HAPPENED / Hydrogen blasts at plant surprised experts

… “No expert had predicted that a hydrogen explosion would occur at the reactor building,” said Goshi Hosono, special adviser to Prime Minister Naoto Kan.

Nuclear experts, including Madarame, overlooked the risk of a hydrogen explosion because they were shackled with what was considered common sense among many nuclear experts. Instead it turned out to be more like excessive self-confidence….

A 35% Spike in Infant Mortality in Northwest Cities Since Meltdown
Is the Dramatic Increase in Baby Deaths in the US a Result of Fukushima Fallout?

By JANETTE D. SHERMAN, MD and JOSEPH MANGANO
U.S. babies are dying at an increased rate. While the United States spends billions on medical care, as of 2006, the US ranked 28th in the world in infant mortality, more than twice that of the lowest ranked countries. (DHHS, CDC, National Center for Health Statistics. Health United States 2010, Table 20, p. 131, February 2011. Get PDF.)

The recent CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report indicates that eight cities in the northwest U.S. (Boise ID, Seattle WA, Portland OR, plus the northern California cities of Santa Cruz, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Jose, and Berkeley) reported the following data on deaths among those younger than one year of age:
4 weeks ending March 19, 2011 – 37 deaths (avg. 9.25 per week)
10 weeks ending May 28, 2011 – 125 deaths (avg.12.50 per week)
This amounts to an increase of 35% (the total for the entire U.S. rose about 2.3%), and is statistically significant….

…The biological findings of Chernobyl cannot be ignored: isotope incorporation will determine the future of all life on earth – animal, fish, bird, plant and human. It is crucial to know this information if we are to avoid further catastrophic damage.

52 MONTH DELAY IN DIABLO CANYON LICENSE RENEWAL HEARING SCHEDULE

Jane Swanson – Janeslo@me.com (805) 595-2605

A June 7 Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Order to delay for 52 months the schedule for hearings on an application for license renewal at the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant leads to the inescapable conclusion that the original schedule was unjustified.

The Order, issued by the NRC’s Atomic Safety and Licensing Board (ASLB), vindicates San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace’s (MFP’s) position that Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s (PG&E’s) September 2009 application for license renewal was premature, and that meaningful assessment of that application could not be justified before critical seismic studies were completed. The ASLB recognizes that these studies are crucial to the environmental analysis for Diablo Canyon. PG&E expects to complete required seismic studies by December 2015.

Prior to this Order, hearings were scheduled to take place before the completion of seismic studies, and only a final decision would have been delayed until the end of 2015.

ALLIANCE REQUEST GRANTED:
NRC DECLARES SUBSTANTIAL HALT IN DIABLO CANYON LICENSE RENEWAL PROCESS PENDING SEISMIC REVIEW

Nearly 16 months after the Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility (A4NR) sat in NRC chairman Gregory Jaczko’s office and told him that PG&E’s relicensing application was premature and failed to take into account California’s request for updated seismic studies, the NRC seems to have finally gotten the message. In a June 7th order, the NRC put a 52 month delay in the relicensing process for Diablo, acknowledging that the state’s Coastal Commission requirements and other state seismic reviews needed to be fulfilled first.
It’s unconscionable that it took the tragic nuclear meltdowns in Fukushima for the NRC and PG&E to realize that they can no longer ignore the issues we have been raising since before the license renewal was even filed.

Fresno supervisors back off nuclear power plan

FRESNO, Calif. — Fresno County officials have rejected plans for up to two nuclear reactors in the county.
The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on Tuesday to withhold a letter of interest for the Fresno Nuclear Energy Group. The Fresno Bee reports that the group – backed by French energy giant Areva – is pursuing an energy park that could include two nuclear reactors as well as solar and biomass energy sources.

Some supervisors had spoken favorably of the group’s effort to explore nuclear energy. But they appeared to change their minds on Tuesday after hearing testimony from more than 20 people opposed to the project.

It’s not clear if the county’s vote will have any effect on the plant’s fate, which will be decided by state and federal regulators.

The Fresno nuclear group says it will continue pursuing the energy complex.

Confessions of a Nuclear Power Safety Expert
by John Perlin
When Italy decided in the mid-’70s to add nuclear power to its power portfolio, young mechanical and nuclear engineer Cesare Silvi was among those attracted to the opportunities it presented. His work centered on nuclear safety issues — in particular, what might happen if something unexpected struck a power plant.

“Why not consider Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima as warnings of greater catastrophes to come and avoid the inevitable by shutting them down,” Cesare Silvi says. (MichaelUtech/istockphoto) Corners he saw cut there eventually soured Silvi on that endeavor. His next position — at the Italian Commission on Nuclear and Alternative Energy Sources, which included work on nuclear disarmament — eventually soured him on nuclear energy itself.

“[If we] continue with nuclear power, there will definitely be worse accidents,” he argued in the wake of Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi disaster. Over the weekend, Italian voters agreed and overwhelming rejected restarting nuclear power in their country…”

“If we are struggling to control the spread of nuclear weapons, why should we extend the technology to civilian use? …Nuclear today only generates about 12 percent of the developed world’s electricity. By instituting an energy efficiency program,” Silvi suggests, “we could fill the gap caused by shutting them all down and put this malevolent genie back into the bottle….”

Germany To Phase Out Nuclear Power; US Could Do Same

In their White House press conference Tuesday, President Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel stood together on topics ranging from the global economy to Libya.
Yet last week, Chancellor Merkel parted ways with the US on what had been a shared vision of how to maintain thriving economies while reducing greenhouse gases. For both nations, part of that plan had been nuclear power. For Germany, it is no longer.

Japan may have no nuclear reactors running by next April

(Reuters) – All 54 of Japan’s nuclear reactors may be shut by next April, adding more than $30 billion a year to the country’s energy costs, if communities object to plant operating plans due to safety concerns, trade ministry officials said on Wednesday.

Swiss lawmakers OK plan to phase out nuclear power

BERN, Switzerland – Swiss lawmakers have approved a government-backed proposal to phase out the use of nuclear power.

A majority of parliamentarians in Switzerland’s lower house voted in favor of the plan to shut down the country’s five nuclear power reactors in the medium term.

HELP CLOSE DANGEROUS GE MARK I NUCLEAR REACTORS

BECOME A CO-PETITIONER TO FORMAL PETITION TO SUSPEND MARK I LICENSES AND HOLD HEARINGS NEAR EVERY MARK I SITE From NIRS

June 9, 2011

Dear Friends,

Thank you to everyone who called the NRC yesterday afternoon and tried to participate in their public meeting on the petition submitted by our friends at Beyond Nuclear to immediately suspend the licenses of all GE Mark I reactors.

Hundreds of people tried to call in and completely overwhelmed the NRC’s system, delaying the meeting by 1/2 hour. Eventually, more than 100 people managed to successfully call in and hear great presentations by Beyond Nuclear, and co-petitioners like Pilgrim Watch, Nuclear Energy Information Service, New England Coalition on Nuclear Pollution and GE Stockholders Alliance. However, the NRC allowed only formal co-petitioners to speak.

We are told that a second meeting on this petition will be held this summer.

Now it’s time for all of us to become Co-Petitioners! You can submit your request here.

Fukushima in Our Food | Commentary by Steven Hoffman
Good reason to stay away from foods high on the food chain…esp dairy products…eat seaweed miso soup on a regular basis…..soak/wash your veggies w bentonite clay dispersed in pure water for 20 min…and consider taking NCD liquid zeolite and blue green algae which are specific for clearing/chelating heavy metals and radioactive isotopes. No one is talking about the cumulative effect when testing food…trace amts when ingesting food on a daily basis over time adds up to a lot more than “trace” in the body… and a reminder – there is no safe level of a “trace” radioactive isotope.

How Many Nuclear Weapons Still Threaten Humanity?
by David Krieger

…The total number of deployed nuclear weapons in the world stands at 5,027 in 2011. Of these, SIPRI estimates that some 2,000 are kept on high operational alert, ready to be fired within moments of an order to do so.

In addition to its deployed nuclear weapons, the US has 6,350 additional weapons for a total of 8,500. Russia has 8,570 additional weapons for a total of 11,000. The UK has an additional 65 weapons for a total of 225. France has an additional 10, for a total of 300. Four other countries have only non-deployed nuclear weapons, according to SIPRI: China with 240; India with 80-100; Pakistan with 90-110; and Israel with 80.

U.S. Nuclear Plants Not Properly Trained For Emergencies: NRC

Nukes to America: “We don’t need no stinking fire protection”
Harvey Wasserman
…So US reactors are now riddled at thousands of key junctures with “fire protection” materials that burn while leaving a dangerous char that hampers fire fighters. Since federal law restricts their liability, reactor owners would pay a bare fraction of the damages from such a fire’s catastrophic fallout. A new NRC inspection has added possible earthquake dangers to the mix.

To prolong the misery, reactor owners want $36 billion in federal loan guarantees, now being opposed by a major grassroots movement you can help.

Millstone Unit 2 Power Spike: Did We Almost Lose Connecticut?
Dominion Demonstrates It Is Unqualified to Operate a Nuclear Power Plant

On February 12, just a month before the triple Fukushima nuclear meltdowns began, a little-noted emergency event transpired at Millstone Unit 2, the 36-year-old nuclear reactor that the state Department of Public Utility Control pronounced “no longer used and useful” back in 1998 because of its dismal operational record.

“Incorrect operation of the turbine controls caused an unplanned power increase from 88 per cent to 96 per cent,” NRC inspectors wrote. In layman’s terms, it was a sudden unexpected power spike, the result of multiple actions taken in violation of licensing safety standards. It took Dominion a full day to realize the degree of the spike and its safety significance.

This event and Dominion’s performance during and after it reveal Dominion to be an arrogant, reckless and dangerous operator of perilous nuclear technology.

Power cuts plan to beat solar storm
By Steve Connor
Monday, 13 June 2011
Officials in Britain and the United States are preparing to make controlled power cuts to their national electricity supplies in response to a warning of a possible powerful solar storm hitting the Earth.
Thomas Bogdan, director of the US Space Weather Prediction Centre, said that controlled power “outages” will protect the national electricity grids against damage which could take years to repair should a solar storm collide with the Earth without any precautions being taken.
Dr Bogdan is in discussions with scientists in the UK Met Office to set up a second space weather prediction centre in Britain to co-ordinate a global response to a threat viewed seriously by the US and UK governments.
One of the subjects is how to protect electricity grids from the immense power surges caused by the geomagnetic storms which happen when highly energetic solar particles collide with the Earth’s magnetic field.
