Bio-Effects, Backroom Profiteering and National Security
These are the emphasis issues in the recent growing media coverage of ‘smart’ meters and the ‘smart’ grid. In the first video clip no less an authority than Ex CIA chief James Woolsey goes so far as to call the smart grid “really stupid.”
The lack of ratepayer choice is also getting attention as commentator Marti Oakley writes that, “This is a new TAX forcing the public to finance SMART METERS/GRID at the rate of 100% of costs plus a profit margin written into it.”
A video clip from Victoria, B.C. shows that California and Maine are not the only places where public pushback against the smart meter invasion is happening.
And, as self-proclaimed ‘cyber warrior’ Capt. Scott Hink, makes clear in an Air Force PR clip below, there’s a direct connection with the other issue this blog covers: nuclear power plants are a prime target for cyber attacks. The fantasized wireless energy grid would make these plants even more vulnerable to disaster than they already are.
As another ‘Cyber Command’ recruiting clip shows the Air Force seems to take the threat pretty seriously. We should, too. Here’s today’s Digest.
Ex CIA chief James Woolsey on ‘Smart’ – EnergyNOW.com
Reporter Thalia Assuras sat down with former CIA Director James Woolsey to discuss the current state of the nation’s electric grid and its vulnerabilities. Woolsey says the federal government’s oversight of grid security is inadequate and attacks on the grid are “entirely possible.”
Radiofrequency Radiation: The Invisible Hazards of “Smart” Meters
by Dr. Ilya Sandra Perlingieri – GlobalResearch.com
…Here are comments by some of the top authorities: Dr. Martin Blank, Associate Professor, Department of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics, Columbia University: “Cells in the body react to EMF’s as potentially harmful, just like any other environmental toxins, including heavy metals and toxic chemicals. The DNA in living cells recognizes electromagnetic fields at very low levels of exposure [not covered by current outdated laws]; and produces a biochemical stress response. The scientific evidence tells us that our safety standards are inadequate, and that we must protect ourselves from exposure to EMF due to power lines, cells phones and the like, or risk the known consequences. The science is very strong and we should sit up and pay attention.”
SMART METERS: No Federal Mandate
Marti Oakley – The PPJ Gazette
…This Standard would also allow utilities to recover from ratepayers any capital, operating expenditures, or other costs of the smart grid investment, including a reasonable rate-of-return.
Furthermore, this Standard would allow utilities to recover remaining book value of any equipment rendered obsolete by the deployment of such smart grid systems. There is no description or list relative to what “qualified smart grid systems” would be. ( end Page 6 ) (all emphasis, mine)
This is a tax bill. “Ratepayers” are actually taxpayers. This is a new TAX forcing the public to finance SMART METERS/GRID at the rate of 100% of costs plus a profit margin written into it. We are being forced to finance a system sold as energy conservation, efficiency, carbon reduction, and at the same time being subjected to unwarranted surveillance, data mining, and extreme health hazards not to mention the invasion of our homes and businesses. Taxes for this system are applied to your energy bill under several categories and not one part of this bill or the SMART GRID system will reduce consumption or make energy sources more secure or efficient.
Irvine, CA is Living Laboratory for Smart Grid – SmartMeterDangers.org
“Thus, the project will literally provide a living laboratory for accurately assessing the interoperability of, and interaction between, all of these various Smart Grid technologies and systems working at the same time. The ISGD will be deployed in the City of Irvine, an ideal demonstration site typical of most heavily populated areas of Southern California in climate, topography, environmental concerns and public policy issues.”

AT&T Accidentally Tells Truth, Shoots Self in Foot
by Amy Kroin – SaveTheInternet
Free Press and other opponents of the AT&T–T-Mobile merger had reason to cheer last week when a damning document AT&T filed with the FCC was accidentally posted on a public site.
Guarding the Grid – EnergyNOW.com
The massive system of power lines known as “the grid” provides almost every spark of electricity in America – but what if it crashes? On the eighth anniversary of the biggest blackout in U.S. history, energyNOW! explores what’s being done now to prevent future outages and protect the grid against terror attacks.
Could Hackers Break into Your Electric Meter?
By George Musser – Scientific American
…Although utilities have plenty of incentive already to secure their systems and many are doing so, others are in the habit of doing the minimum it takes to comply with regulation. So regulators may need to lean on them. A smart meter installed today will probably still be there in 20 years, so the time to act is now. “We may only have one chance to do it right,” Jun said.
