Cell Phones Declared ‘Possible’ Carcinogen! – EON Digest 6-1-2011

PARADIGM SHIFTS HAPPEN
You can figure that when official, industry-friendly bodies begin to grudgingly admit ‘possible risks’ – remember asbestos, lead, DDT, PCBs, pesticides, tobacco? – the ‘truthiness’ is beginning to hit the fan. Just as in the case of the on-going planetary nuclear contamination disaster unfolding at Fukushima, they’re breaking the bad news to us gently. Don’t panic. Just be aware that you’re an electro-magnetic being and keep your cell phone away from your brain and reproductive organs. Wireless radiation from cell phones, ‘smart’ meters and other RF devices are a danger to your DNA. Here’s why.

WHO: Cell phone use can increase possible cancer risk
“This is a big deal.”
(CNN) – Radiation from cell phones can possibly cause cancer, according to the World Health Organization. The agency now lists mobile phone use in the same “carcinogenic hazard” category as lead, engine exhaust and chloroform.
Before its announcement Tuesday, WHO had assured consumers that no adverse health effects had been established….

…A team of 31 scientists from 14 countries, including the United States, made the decision after reviewing peer-reviewed studies on cell phone safety. The team found enough evidence to categorize personal exposure as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”

What that means is they found some evidence of increase in glioma and acoustic neuroma brain cancer for mobile phone users, but have not been able to draw conclusions for other types of cancers

“The biggest problem we have is that we know most environmental factors take several decades of exposure before we really see the consequences,” said Dr. Keith Black, chairman of neurology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

The type of radiation coming out of a cell phone is called non-ionizing. It is not like an X-ray, but more like a very low-powered microwave oven.

“What microwave radiation does in most simplistic terms is similar to what happens to food in microwaves, essentially cooking the brain,” Black said. “So in addition to leading to a development of cancer and tumors, there could be a whole host of other effects like cognitive memory function, since the memory temporal lobes are where we hold our cell phones.”

Implications for ‘smart’ meter deployment – Break-Through in Maine
Skelton, Taintor & Abbott Wins Landmark Smart Meter Case
On behalf of several Maine residents, Skelton, Taintor & Abbott secured a landmark decision that will benefit utility customers throughout the country. Alan Stone, chair of the firm’s energy law group, successfully convinced the Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) to find that it was an unjust and unreasonable practice for Central Maine Power Company (CMP) to refuse to permit residential and small commercial customers to opt-out of CMP’s smart meter program.

Skelton, Taintor & Abbott represented a group of customers in a complaint against CMP, and convinced the MPUC to order CMP to offer customers the option of opting out of the smart meter program and retaining their existing electromagnetic meters. Stone proved that because of unresolved concerns relating to health, privacy and cyber security resulting from the installation of wireless meters on their homes, customers should have a choice concerning the installation of those meters. CMP argued vigorously that customers should not be allowed to opt out, and the MPUC found that position to be unjust and unreasonable.

The Portland Press Herald has described the decision as a “landmark” case that represents the first time any state had ordered an electric utility to permit customers the choice to opt out of a smart meter program. The case has been followed by other Public Utilities Commissions and utility experts around the country, and will serve as precedent for others in the determination of how to resolve what has become a growing debate about customer choice and smart meters.

Alan Stone is also chair of the trial practice group at Skelton, Taintor and Abbott, and has been recognized by Best Lawyers in the area of Energy Law.

Informed Commentary

From Sandi Maurer, EMFSafety Network:
Today the World Health Organization/ International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified non-ionizing radiofrequency radiation as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B). This is the same classification used for lead, DDT and EMF’s from power lines.

This is big news as cell phones, smart meters, cell towers, DECT, cordless phones, baby monitors and other wireless devices all emit non-ionizing radiofrequency radiation. Governments and decision makers can no longer hide behind the “no RF health effects” industry mantra.

Cindy Sage – Sage Associates:
The WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer has just issued
it’s decision that non-ionizing radiofrequency radiation is classified
as a 2B (Possible) Carcinogen.

This mirrors the 2001 IARC finding that extremely low frequency (ELF-EMF) that
classified as a 2B (Possible) Carcinogen. This pertained to power frequency (power line
and appliance) non-ionizing radiation.

These two findings confirm that non-ionizing radiation should be considered as a possible
risk factor for cancers; and that new, biologically-based public safety standards are urgently
needed.

Martin Weatherall WEEP.org
Besides all the great scientists who have demonstrated the many adverse health effects of wireless radiation, I would like to thank Mona Nilsson, whose recent investigative work shone a spotlight on the IARC meeting, exposed industry insiders and ensured that a more honest meeting occurred. I shudder to think what the result may have been without her involvement !

From Susan Foster:
This HUGE NEWS made it because some excellent reporting “outed” a highly paid Motorola consultant who was on the WHO Committee, and he was forced to step down late last week. Thus we have what should have existed long before 5 billion cell phones were in use: a warning that this form of non-ionizing radiation is a possible human carcinogen. The warning would have been stronger but for other industry-oriented members of the committee, yet still this is a HUGE step toward greater awareness. Please pass the news on. Use hollow tube ear-pieces, (NOT constant Blue Tooth), text, speaker phone — and guys, turn the phone completely OFF when in your pants pocket if you care about your ovaries or sperm. Pregnant women and women who wish to have healthy children, turn the phone off when anywhere near your baby or ovaries. A purse does NOT block RF radiation.

Becoming aware is half the battle; distance is your friend. Keep the cell 12″ from your body when it is on.

From Mary Beth Brangan, EON:
The IARC had to admit the possible carcinogenicity based on the telecom industry and government-funded INTERPHONE STUDY, among other science. Even though it was buried in Appendix 2 and had 11 serious design flaws, the Interphone study clearly showed that ‘heavy users’ (defined as those who only used their about 2 hours a month) after ten years had a doubled risk of glioma—an often fatal brain tumor, on the same side of the head they held their phone. This study, which looked at people before today’s really heavy use, was the smoking gun they couldn’t ignore, even though when Interphone was initially reported by the press, irresponsible media headlines hid the real results.

Expect some heavy PR spin to emanate from the wireless industry while they try to push the cat back into the bag, but it’s too late!

Stop AT&T's Grab for the 'Master Switch' – No Merger w/T-Mobil

A Monopoly Reborn
Remember back in 1984 when AT&T’s 70-year-old ‘Ma Bell’ telephone monopoly was broken up by court order?
In his historic ruling Judge Harold H. Greene wrote, “It is antithetical to our political and economic system for this key industry to be within the control of one company.” Ma Bell was broken into the ‘Baby Bells,’ all in the name of competition and customer choice.
That was then.
Now, as the above chart shows, Kronos has eaten his own children and – Terminator-like – AT&T is back.
Not shown in the chart [from Tim Wu’s brilliant new book, The Master Switch: The Rise and Fall of Information Empires] is AT&T’s latest move: a proposed merger with T-Mobil. If allowed the merger will result in two companies, AT&T and Verizon, controlling nearly 80 percent of the wireless market. Bad for jobs. Bad for phone bills. Bad for competition. Bad for customer choice. And bad for net neutrality.
And remember, this is the same AT&T that is proposing to rip out it’s existing national hard-wire phone network, thus forcing customers into the wireless domain of which it would control 80%!!

FUKUSHIMA DREAMS – 1985 TEPCO Promo Video

Nuclear Delusions
The two video clips below, a two-part 1985 PR paeon of priase to the rosy imagined nuclear future captures the grandiose delusions of infallibility that still motivate that endangered species, the International Nuclear Establishment and its minions the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations Scientific Committee on the effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) and the World Health Organization (WHO) – not to mention the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Note the schlachy-heroic, western-style industrial music track in these videos, especially in Pt. 2, where they climax with a knock-off a song you may recognize from the musical HAIR.

In this March 24, 2011 aerial photo taken by a small unmanned drone and released by AIR PHOTO SERVICE, damaged Unit 3, left, and Unit 4 of the crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant are seen in Okumamachi, Fukushima prefecture, northern Japan. (Air Photo Service Co. Ltd., Japan)

Nuclear News Update – 5-26-2011

Radiation is not a problem to human health – it says behind this mask – Dees Illustratoins

The Implications of the Fukushima Accident on the World’s Operating Reactors
Arnie Gundersen explains how containment vents were added to the GE Mark 1 BWR as a “band aid” 20 years after the plants built in order to prevent an explosion of the notoriously weak Mark 1 containment system. Obviously the containment vent band aid fix did not work since all three units have lost containment integrity and are leaking radioactivity. Gundersen also discusses seismic design flaws, inadequate evacuation planning, and the taxpayer supported nuclear industry liability fund.

Is Fukushima Now Ten Chernobyls into the Sea?
by Harvey Wasserman
New readings show levels of radioisotopes found up to 30 kilometers offshore from the on-going crisis at Fukushima are ten times higher than those measured in the Baltic and Black Seas during Chernobyl.

“When it comes to the oceans, says Ken Buesseler, a chemical oceonographer at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, “the impact of Fukushima exceeds Chernobyl.”

The news comes amidst a tsunami of devastating revelations about the Fukushima disaster and the crumbling future of atomic power, along with a critical Senate funding vote today:

Fukushima’s owner, the Tokyo Electric Power Company, has confirmed that fuel at Unit One melted BEFORE the arrival of the March 11 tsunami.

The Obama Administration has still produced no comprehensive monitoring of radioactive fallout coming to the United States and has provided no guidance as to how American citizens can protect themselves, except to say not to worry. Polls now show more Americans opposing new reactors than favoring them, and grassroots opposition is fierce.

But the industry is pushing ahead with demands for $36 billion in loan guarantees for new reactors, with a preliminary vote expected soon in a House Appropriations Subcommittee. Nuclear opponents are asked to call the White House and Congress steadily through the 2012 budget process.

Also, today (May 26) may see a vote in a Senate committee on a CEDA plan that would provide still more money for new nukes. Safe energy advocates are urged to call their Senators asap.

The United Nations Scientific Committee on the effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), which has published reports about the 1986 Chernobyl accident, said it would take at least two years to produce a full report on the issue.

“Everybody wants answers tomorrow or next week … but this is not possible. We need time,” UNSCEAR Chairman Wolfgang Weiss told a news conference, adding that preliminary findings were expected in May 2012.

“So far what we have seen in the population, what we have seen in children with thyroid screening, what we have seen in workers … we wouldn’t expect to see health effects,” he said. [This is the same body that poo-poos the impact of Chernobyl.]

Cell Phones Damage Brain, DNA and Sperm, Study Says

Cell phones and your brainCNN
Are you being told everything you need to know about cell phone radiation? Dr. Sanjay Gupta investigates.

Researchers Say New Studies Confirm Cell Phone Hazards

“Stunning proof” ignored in North America, scientists say

Conference hears ‘overpowering’ evidence on cellphone dangers
Cellphones disrupt DNA, impair brain function and lower sperm count, say scientists from Turkey, Russia and Israel, who present their results at a conference today in Turkey.

Professor Nesrin Seyhan, a World Health Organization and NATO advisor from Gazi University in Ankara says just four hours of exposure to RF-EMF disrupts the ability of human brain cells to repair damaged genes.

Other new work from Australia shows damage to human sperm, confirming a similar report from Northern Ireland last week….Read more

Newswise — Cell phones are a ubiquitous part of our lives. New independent studies offer stunning proof that confirms findings from the Council of Europe—pulsed digital signals from cell phones disrupt DNA, impair brain function and lower sperm count. A meeting convened by Environmental Health Trust, with the Turkish cancer society, and Gazi University, revealed new research on this important issue showing damage to DNA, brain and sperm. Dr. Devra Davis, a member of a Nobel Peace Prize team, chairs this meeting with Prof. Nesrin Seyhan , WHO and NATO advisor who is head and founder of Biophysics Department and Bioelectromagnetics Laboratory at Gazi University in Ankara and founder of the Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (GNRP) Center.

Prof. Seyhan’s work confirms and strengthens the finding, that just four hours of exposure to RF-EMF disrupts the ability of human brain cells to repair damaged genes. Other new important work from Australia shows damage to human sperm. “We are deeply concerned about what this could mean for public health,” noted Prof Seyhan.

“This work provides a warning signal to all of us. The evidence justifies precautionary measures to reduce the risks for everyone of us,” says Prof. Wilhelm Mosgoeller from the Medical University of Vienna who has led European research teams, who found that RF-EMF induce DNA breaks. New studies carried out by scientists in Turkey, Russia and Israel, have investigated a variety of biological effects triggered by cell phones. Two years after false accusations against scientists who described DNA breaks, now the recent results finally show, that exposure induced DNA breaks are real.

On May 23, 2011, a think-tank of experts organized by Gazi University and EHT convened at a workshop in Istanbul, Turkey to share explosive independent studies on this topic. Titled “Science Update: Cell Phones and Health,” the workshop will be held in Cibali Hall at the Kadir Has University, which is located in Istanbul, Turkey.

The workshop is co-sponsored by leaders in cell phone safety, including the Environmental Health Trust, The International Commission on Electromagnetic Safety, Gazi University and Athens University. The workshop coincides with the launch of Dr. Davis’s book, Disconnect: The Truth About Cell Phone Radiation, What the Industry Has Done to Hide It, and How to Protect Your Family (Innobook, 2011) in Turkish.

The workshop will attract an array of leaders in the field, who will be discussing underreported, highly thought-provoking research never investigated in North America. The invited speakers include Prof. Dr. Murat Tuncer, Head of Cancer Control Department at The Ministry of Health of Turkey; Dr. Lukas H. Margaritis, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Cell Biology and Biophysics at the University of Athens; Dr. Nesrin Seyhan, of Gazi University’s Biophysics Department; Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Mosgoeller of the Medical University of Vienna; Dr. Annie Sasco, Director of Epidemiology at INSERM/National Institute of Health in Bordeaux, France; Dr. Lukas H. Margaritis, Professor Emeritus in Department of Cell Biology and Biophysics at the University of Athens; Dr. Siegal Sadetzki, Cancer & Radiation Epidemiology Unit, Gertner Institute, Chaim Sheba Medical Center, Tel- Hashomer 52621, Israel and Sackler School of Medicine, Tel-Aviv University, Israel and Dr. Devra Davis, from Environment Health Trust in the US.

Impact of Cell Phones to Reproductive Heath and Cell Death
Among the highlights of the conference a research team at the University of Athens will discuss how insect studies have demonstrated that acute exposure to GSM (Global System for Mobile) signals brings about DNA fragmentation in insects’ ovarian cells, and consequently a large reduction in the reproductive capacity of the insects. Further studies demonstrated that long exposures induced cell death to the insects in the study.

Cell Phones Impact to the Fetus
Workshop attendee Dr. Adamantia Fragopoulou, leader of a team at the University of Athens, will share a finding about embryonic development taking place in the presence of a mild electromagnetic field. Throughout the gestation period, exposure to radiation for just six minutes a day affects the bone formation of fetuses. The team suggests that this is possibly caused by the interaction of cell phone radiation with crucial molecules and ions involved in embryogenesis.

Cell Phones and How it Impacts the of the Young Brain
Dr. Seyhan will share work performed at Gazi University demonstrating that the increasing use of cell phones—and the increasing number of associated base stations—are becoming a widespread source of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation. This work suggests that some biological effects are likely to occur even with low-level electromagnetic fields. The team concluded that 900 and 1,800 MHz radiation levels is related to an increase in the permeability of the blood-brain barrier in young adult male rats. The rat’s brains can be used to correspond to the brains of human teenagers. This research is motivating by the fact that children are increasingly heavy users of cell phones; at higher frequencies, children absorb more energy from external radio frequency radiation than adults, because their tissue normally contains a larger number of ions and so has a higher conductivity. They conclude limiting cell phone and cordless phone use by young children and teenagers to the lowest possible level and urgently ban telecom companies from marketing to them.

In addition, research from a team at the University of Athens will share their studies demonstrating that rats exposed to cell phone radiation were unable to remember the location of places previously familiar to them. This finding is of potentially critical importance for people, who heavily rely on spatial memory for recording information about their environment and spatial orientation.
