Fields, “There comes a time in human affairs when we must seize the bull by the tail and stare the situation squarely in the face.” Its time to shut down the nuclear industry and put our best minds to work on how to take care of its radioactive kaka till the end of time. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is routinely waiving fire rule violations at nearly half the nation’s 104 commercial reactors, even though fire presents one of the chief hazards at nuclear plants.

U.S. Nuclear Plants Drafting Customized Fire Plans-ProPublica.org
Nuclear plants with some longstanding fire-safety problems are enrolled in a special Nuclear Regulatory Commission program that allows them to customize fire protection measures based on an in-depth risk analysis. NRC has approved plans at to test plants, Shearon Harris and Oconee. The others are expected to continue the process through at least 2016. Until their plans are approved, NRC has said it will enforce the only most serious violations of fire rules. Plants in the program are shown in a map here.
